The library
A reusable HUD overlay for SwiftUI apps.
- Implemented dragging, edge snapping, and compact and expanded states.
- Tuned matchedGeometryEffect and spring transitions.
- Packaged the overlay as a Swift Package for reuse.
Detailed development notes
Timeline
2025.02 - (in progress)
- Packaged the HUD overlay as a Swift Package so it can be added to any app
- Tuned interactive springs and snap margins for draggable cards
Tools & skills
Skills
- SwiftUI layout & matchedGeometryEffect
- Interactive springs and gesture handling
- Swift Package modularization
Motivation
I wanted a lightweight, reusable floating HUD for metrics and debug overlays, with compact and expanded states kept in sync. Existing HUDs were tied to specific apps or UIKit; I needed a pure SwiftUI overlay with snap-to-edge logic and customizable cards.
What I learned
- Sharing state and matching geometry between compact and expanded SwiftUI views
- Tuning springs for dragging, attachment, and dramatic collapse interactions
- Designing constants and card styles that consumers can override
